Mountain Hiking on Mount Elgon: Compared to other challenging hikes in East Africa’s volcanoes, Mount Elgon is the most interesting choice for visitors.

Thanks to its cooler climate and lower elevation, it is also open all year, is less congested due to fewer visitors ascending it, and offers many of the same attractions.

Hiking/climbing to the summits of Mount Elgon does not require any special equipment or technical expertise.

Mountain climbing in the Virunga ranges: Mgahinga Gorilla National Park offers mountain climbing on three volcanoes (Mount Gahinga, Mount Sabinyo, and Mount Muhabura), all of which are part of the large Virunga Massif that extends from Rwanda to Uganda.

Uganda hiking in the Rwenzori Mountains

The Rwenzori mountains offer the most demanding and rewarding climbing adventure for experienced climbers.

Africa’s highest mountain ranges, the Rwenzori Mountains, are Africa’s highest mountain ranges and a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Uganda.

The highest point, Margherita on Mt Stanley, is 5109 meters above sea level and snow-capped all year, forming a natural border between Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

It is Africa’s third highest peak, after Kilimanjaro and Mt Kenya.

Although most hikers find it challenging, they all accept that the views and scenery are superior to Africa’s two highest peaks.

Hiking Mount Sabinyo

Uganda, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Rwanda all share Mount Sabinyo, which rises 3669 meters above sea level.

Only the Ugandan side can climb the 14-kilometer round trip, which includes passes through a steep ride to the peaks and takes 8 hours.

The name means “Old Man’s Teeth” in the local language because of the rugged summit separated by deep gorges.

Climbing to the peak in Rwanda and Uganda entails walking a ridge with dramatic drops into gorges, with ladders on the final trek.

Until you reach the summit, you will be in Rwanda, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Uganda at the same time.

The 14-kilometer round-trip journey takes approximately 45 minutes.

Hiking Mount Gahinga

Mount Gahinga Hiking
Mount Gahinga, at 3474 meters above sea level, has a swamp-filled crater and a massive Lobelia on its peak, and the ascent and descent take only 6 hours.
On a clear day, the endangered Golden monkeys can be seen near the Bamboo Forest.

Mount Morungole is a great place to hike. Climb one of northeastern Uganda’s highest extinct volcanoes while also visiting one of East Africa’s most remote people groups, the Ik People, who were the first people in the area and live on top of the volcano, which is only accessible by a path up.

Mount Muhabura, at 4127 meters, is the park’s highest elevation.
In the local language, the name translates to “The Guide.”
The top has a clear lake that is 36 meters deep and offers panoramic views of Rwanda and Uganda, as well as incredible photographic opportunities.
The hike is about 8 hours long round trip and covers 12 kilometers.

Mount Moroto is a great place to hike.

Mount Moroto is located in Eastern Uganda’s remote Karamoja Region, and is best reached through a safari to Kidepo Valley Park.
Mount Moroto is an off-the-beaten-path destination.
Mount Moroto’s mountain hinkin can be combined with wildlife watching in Kidepo and a trip to Sipi Falls.
